We answer your questions about the Key Account

What is the difference between a resident and a non-resident?

The difference between a resident and a non-resident lies in their legal and tax status according to the country concerned. In Spain, the differences are as follows:

Resident:
  • Legal residence: Has the right to live in Spain permanently, either because they are an EU citizen, hold a residence permit or are a Spanish citizen.
  • Tax residence: A person is considered tax resident if they spend more than 183 days a year in Spain, if their main centre or base of activities or economic interests is in the country, or if their spouse and/or minor children reside in Spain.
  • Taxes: They are subject to tax on their worldwide income, meaning that they must declare and pay tax on income earned both in Spain and abroad.

Non-resident:
  • Legal residence: Does not have the right to reside permanently in Spain, although they may be in the country temporarily for reasons such as tourism, study or business.
  • Tax residence: Does not meet the criteria for being considered tax resident in Spain.
  • Taxes: Only pays tax on income generated in Spain, not on worldwide income.

What are the requirements for opening a bank account in Spain as a foreign national?

Any international citizen can open Banco Sabadell's Key Account, a solution designed for both foreign residents and non-residents. The basic requirements are to be of legal age and not be listed in a debtors’ register.

As for the necessary documents, non-resident citizens only need to provide their national identity document or passport from their country of origin, together with proof of address and, in certain circumstances, a certificate of non-residence.

To open the account, the required documentation varies according to the applicant's country of origin:
  • European Union (EU) residents: If you are an EU resident, you can open your bank account using the identity document from your country of origin or a valid passport.
  • Non-EU residents: If you do not reside in an EU country, you will need to provide your passport in order to open the account.

Is an NIE required to open a bank account in Spain?

To open Banco Sabadell's Key Account, it is not mandatory to have a Foreigner Identification Number (NIE); the process can be started using your passport or the national identity document from your country of origin as your main identification document.

In addition to the identity document, the official requirements are that you must be of legal age, provide your TIN (Taxpayer Identification Number from your country) and provide proof of address. As this is a process that requires validation, you must visit a branch in person by making an appointment in advance.

What is a TIN and why do I need it to open the account?

The TIN (Tax Identification Number) is the official number you use for tax identification purposes in your country of origin or in the country where you have your usual tax residence. Banco Sabadell requires this information in order to comply with international banking transparency and anti-money laundering regulations.

Depending on your nationality or country of origin, the TIN may have different names:
  • In the United Kingdom: It corresponds to the National Insurance Number (NINO) or the Unique Taxpayer Reference (UTR).
  • In the United States: It is usually the Social Security Number (SSN) or the Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN).
  • In France: It is the Numéro Fiscal de Référence (SPI).
  • In Italy: It is known as the Codice Fiscale.
  • In Latin American countries: It may be referred to as an RFC, RUT, CPF or NIT, depending on the country.
To ensure that the opening of your Key Account is processed quickly and without complications, remember to locate this number in your official documents (such as tax returns, payslips or tax identification documents from your country) and provide it together with your passport or national identity document on the day of your in-person visit to the branch.
