If you want to avoid falling for a holiday fraud scam, you should be cautious and be wary of offers that are not very credible.

Summer tends to be a good time to relax and enjoy a rest, but we should not become complacent because it is also a time when were are prone to a cyberattack.

That is why it is advisable to follow a series of tips to minimise the possibility of falling victim to a fraud that could ruin your holidays. Let us explain them to you here.

Tips to protect yourself from Holiday Fraud Scams

Whether it is to book a hotel, buy a train ticket or just to buy a souvenir from wherever you are, the mobile phone has become an essential travel companion and our main payment tool.

For this reason, we want to give you these recommendations so that you can use it as safely as possible during your holidays:

  • Try to avoid WI-FI networks and public USBs that are often available in many holiday resorts. If you have no choice but to use one of these at any given time, try at least not to do any online banking or use any kind of sensitive information that could be passed on to cybercriminals.

  • Verify the identity of the person who is writing to you. Ignore a message purporting to be from a family member or friend who suddenly writes you an email or sends you a message requesting money urgently. Before helping them, verify their identity by other means, e.g. by making a phone call.

  • Don't rely on impossible “bargains”. If you use the Internet to look for travel or accommodation deals, be careful of those that are excessively cheap and out of market prices, as they could be fraudulent.

  • Don't reveal your location on your social media, as this will help you avoid getting scammed.

  • Never share your passwords with anyone else to prevent them from being compromised. Banco Sabadell will never ask you for this information. For this reason, do not share any password or confidential data, such as transaction keys or card details (PIN, CVV or numbering), even if the sending party identifies itself as Banco Sabadell.

  • Keep the security software on all your devices up to date to prevent suspicious software from entering.

  • Be cautious of any suspicions you have about a possible fraud. For example, never click on links in an email you have received from a sender you do not know. If you do, a criminal could hack into your account and steal your identity.

  • Never allow a website to remember your details, especially your credit card details, if you make any online purchases.

  • When making a purchase, visit only shops certified as ‘Verified by Visa’ or ‘Mastercard SecureCode’.

  • Use the two-factor authentication in the bank’s app. As an example, Banco Sabadell offers you the option of including an extra verification by digital signature for any online purchase or transfer. We also offer you the option of facial recognition (iOS) or fingerprint (Android), which are two of the most secure authentication methods, as they are based on biometrics.

  • Limit your online payments. You can always limit or block your card any time to avoid any unwanted online purchases using the app.

  • Check for the padlock in the URL bar. Always check that the security lock icon appears in the navigation bar in order to make sure that you are on a secure website.
  • Trading information and comments. Beware of any e-commerce sites for which there is a lack of information on the internet and those that always have only positive reviews.
  • Do not click on a link in an email or message if you are not sure who sent it to you. If you do, your devices could be infected and your personal data or bank details could be compromised.

If you have any queries, Banco Sabadell has a customer service team at your disposal 24x7 on 963 085 000.
